Wind Symphony

The Duke University Wind Symphony, directed by Pamela Halverson, presents formal concerts, open-air garden concerts, and an annual Viennese Ball.
The Wind Symphony's repertoire explores musical styles from the Medieval Period to the 21st Century. Featured composers include Gabrieli, Bach, Mozart, Shostakovich, Holst, Grainger, Sousa, and Ives, as well as those writing for the medium today. The Wind Symphony has a rich tradition of excellence; in 1995, it hosted the renowned conductor and composer Karel Husa.
The Wind Symphony rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 until 9:30 in Baldwin Auditorium, beginning with an open rehearsal on Thursday, August 28 from 7:30-9:30pm. If you are interested, please attend an ensemble information session in the Mary Duke Biddle Music Building on Saturday, August 23 from 4:00-5:30pm. Information about the audition process, concert repertoire, concert venues, and other issues will be provided at this meeting. All brass, woodwind, and percussion players are encouraged to attend this session.
For the audition students
should prepare approximately five minutes of music including
about two or three in a fast tempo to demonstrate technical
proficiency and the rest in a slow one to show tone quality,
phrasing and musical sensitivity. Sight-reading and scales
are not normally required, but may be requested in some
cases.
