Performance Opportunities
- Auditions: Spring 2010 audition schedule and contact information for ensemble directors and private instructors
- Area Studies--Piano: a diverse faculty supports students of all levels in developing solo and ensemble performance skills. The Piano Area also arranges opportunities for students to train with prestigious Master Class instructors.
- Area Studies--Voice: information about faculty in the voice division, performance classes, ensembles and other performance opportunities, and a list of resources. The Voice Area also arranges opportunities for students to train with prestigious Master Class instructors.
- Chamber Music: coordinated by Jonathan Bagg, these ensembles explore the repertoire for string quartet, piano trio, vocal duet, and more.
- Chorale: directed by Rodney Wynkoop, this is a concert and touring choir of 50 singers. This year’s annual Spring Break tour will go to New England. The group’s 2008-09 repertoire included several short pieces and Handel’s Israel in Egypt.
- Collegium Musicum: directed by Karen Cook, the Collegium is devoted to the performance of early music, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance motets and madrigals, and Baroque sonatas and cantatas. Opportunities exist for singers and for those who would like to participate in recorder or viol consorts, or perform on other early instruments. Last year’s repertoire includes Jewish music of the Baroque period and English music of the Renaissance.
- Djembe Ensemble: directed by Bradley Simmons, this group offers an exciting opportunity for students to develop skills in the art of West African drumming.
- Duke New Music Ensemble [dnme]: directed by Dan Ruccia, [dnme] comprises Duke undergraduate and graduate performers who bring 20th and 21st century music to the fore, including new works by Duke graduate composers.
- Jazz Ensemble: directed by John Brown, the Jazz Ensemble has a rich history of excellence with well-known featured artists; the 2008-09 season included appearances by Bobby Sanabria, Russell Malone, Bernard Purdie, and Randy Brecker.
- Opera Workshop: coordinated by Susan Dunn, the Workshop presents operas and scenes in staged concert. Recent productions have included scenes from The Marriage of Figaro, Fidelio, and The Magic Flute. Last year’s production was Die Fledermaus, presented as a full opera with orchestra.
- Symphony Orchestra: directed by Harry Davidson. Last year, we examined works by eastern European composers, including Stamitz and Dvorák, performed a salute to Ralph Vaughan Williams, and celebrated the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn's birth with a performance of the Overture and Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night's Dream with Duke's Antic Shakespeare Company. This year’s repertoire will include works by Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Schumann, as well as a production of Mozart’s comic opera, Così fan tutti, performed with professional opera singers. A benefit concert in Beaufort, SC is also offered each spring.
- Wind Symphony: directed by Verena Mösenbichler, the Wind Symphony performs a wide variety of high level wind band music. The 2009-10 season will include formal concerts and the annual Viennese Ball.
